English Phrasal Verbs Through Stories Interior

I was contacted by an English teacher who wanted to self-publish a textbook with a unique take on teaching phrasal verbs. Each unit starts with a story written in two different versions. The first version contains phrasal verbs or idiomatic expressions. The second version does not. Students compare the versions line by line and infer the meaning of the phrasal verbs and idiomatic expressions used in the first version.

One interesting aspect of this book was formatting the two versions side-by-side in two columns. Because the stories varied in length, with some spilling over onto three pages, I had to prepare a few templates for different length stories. It was also important to the author that the texts be aligned so that the phrasal verbs in Version 1 were close to the equivalent text in Version 2. I had to do some tweaking with spacing and page breaks to do that.

Finally, I enjoyed the chance to create an icon and formatting for the audio track listings! I don’t get a lot of chances to work with graphics, so I’d love to take on projects that involve more drawing!
